Watch the Baby Elephants Feeding in the South of Sri Lanka

Visit the Elephant Transit Home near Udawalawe and watch baby elephants feeding. It is an unforgettable experience!

Situated on the border of the Udawalawe National Park, the Elephant Transit Home takes care of orphaned elephant calves. You can watch around fifty small elephants of various ages here. They can roam freely through the adjacent national park and they are fed by milk formulae every three hours. You can be there to watch them. Public viewing of feeding is at 9AM, 12PM, 3PM and 6PM.

The main mission of the orphanage is to reintroduce the elephants to the wild. This is the reason why a lot of emphasis is put on minimizing human contact. Moreover, they are released back to their natural habitat in groups formed during their stay in the orphanage. Due to this policy, the local conservationists are very successful in reintroducing animals to the wild.

To get to the orphanage from Tropical Garden will take you less than one and a half hours and it is recommended to combine the visit with a safari trip in the Udawalawe National Park.
